What a run flat tyre actually is
A run flat tyre (often marked RFT, RSC, ZP or similar on the sidewall depending on the manufacturer) has a reinforced sidewall that can support the weight of the car for a short distance even after losing all air pressure. That's the whole point of them — no spare wheel is needed, because the tyre itself gets you to somewhere safer.
They're standard fitment on many BMW and MINI models, and used on some Mercedes-Benz and Lexus vehicles too. If your car has no spare wheel or space-saver in the boot, there's a good chance it's running on run flats.
The 50mph and 50-mile guidance
Once a run flat has lost pressure, manufacturers generally advise against driving faster than around 50mph or further than around 50 miles on it, and these limits vary by brand and model, so always check your vehicle handbook. Treat a deflated run flat as a get-you-home measure, not a tyre to keep driving on indefinitely.
Why run flats usually can't be repaired
Once a run flat has been driven on while deflated, the reinforced sidewall structure that makes it a run flat in the first place can be damaged internally, even if there's no visible sign from the outside. Because of this, and because of where damage typically occurs on a deflated run flat, replacement is usually the only safe option rather than a repair.
Switching to conventional tyres
It's often possible to move away from run flats to conventional tyres, provided you're comfortable carrying a spare wheel, a sealant and inflator kit, or accepting the risk of being without either. This is a genuine option worth discussing if you're finding run flats expensive to replace or harder to source in your size.

TPMS and run flats
Because a run flat tyre can look and feel almost normal even when it's lost pressure, cars fitted with them rely heavily on the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to warn the driver. If your TPMS warning light comes on, treat it seriously and get the tyre checked, since you may not otherwise notice a problem until much later than you would on a conventional tyre.
Ride comfort and cost trade-offs
Run flats have stiffer sidewalls than conventional tyres, which generally makes for a firmer ride and can mean a bit more road noise. They also tend to cost more to replace than an equivalent conventional tyre, and stock availability can vary more by size and brand.
Matching tyres across an axle
If you're replacing one run flat, it's worth checking the tread depth and wear on its partner on the same axle. Mixing a new tyre with a significantly worn one on the same axle can affect handling and grip balance, particularly on vehicles that rely on run flats without a spare as a backup.
