A caravan or trailer might cover a few hundred miles a year, so the tread often looks almost new when the tyre is quietly failing for a different reason. Rubber hardens and cracks with time and UV exposure, and a tyre can be dangerous well before the tread wears down, simply because it has aged.

Motorhomes are somewhere in between: they can rack up motorway miles like a car, but they also sit unused over winter in the same way a caravan does, so both ageing and wear need to be checked.

Leaving a caravan or trailer stood in one place for months, especially under load, can leave flat spots on the tyre where it has been resting, and can accelerate sidewall cracking. Cracking often shows first around the sidewall shoulder or in the tread grooves, and is a sign the rubber has started to degrade rather than simply wear.

Caravans and trailers need tyres rated for the weight they will actually carry when loaded, not just the size shown on the old tyre. Motorhomes built on a van chassis often need CP-marked tyres, a specification designed for the higher loads and different weight distribution of a motorhome compared with the panel van it may be based on.

We fit to the correct load rating and, where applicable, CP marking for the vehicle, rather than simply matching the size that was on it before.

Caravans and trailers often carry a spare wheel of the same age as the road wheels, which is worth checking at the same time as the fitted tyres. Jacking points on caravans and trailers are frequently different from a car's, and lifting the wrong point can damage the chassis, so we work from the manufacturer's recommended points wherever they are known.
