What is an AGM battery?

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. Instead of the electrolyte sloshing freely around lead plates as in a traditional flooded battery, it's held in a fine fibreglass mat sandwiched tightly between the plates. That construction makes the battery sealed, spill-proof, more resistant to vibration, and able to accept and deliver charge far more efficiently than a standard design.

It's a more expensive way to build a battery, which is why manufacturers only specify it where the vehicle genuinely needs it.

Built for repeated deep discharge

A conventional flooded battery is designed mainly to deliver a short, heavy burst of current to start the engine and then be topped back up by the alternator. AGM batteries tolerate being partially discharged and recharged repeatedly, sometimes hundreds of times a day, without the plate degradation that would quickly wear out a standard battery under the same treatment.

That deep-cycle tolerance is exactly what's needed on a car that switches its engine off every time it stops in traffic and restarts it moments later.

Why stop-start and high-demand cars need AGM

Every stop-start cycle draws a meaningful jolt of current to restart the engine, and the battery has to recover that charge again before the next stop. On top of that, modern cars are carrying more electrical load than ever — heated seats, multiple screens, driver-assist cameras and sensors, and powerful sound systems all drawing current even when the engine isn't charging.

AGM batteries are built to cope with both demands at once: rapid cycling from stop-start, and sustained load from onboard electronics. A standard flooded battery fitted to the same car will simply wear out far sooner than its rated life.

Why fitting a standard battery in an AGM car goes wrong

If a car was designed around an AGM battery and a standard flooded battery is fitted instead — often to save money — the results are predictable. The stop-start system typically disables itself once it detects the wrong battery type, the charging system can behave unpredictably, and the standard battery itself will degrade much faster under the cycling demands it was never built for.

We only fit AGM to vehicles that specify it, matched to the correct dimensions, terminal layout, and current ratings for that vehicle.

Coding and registration

Many AGM-equipped vehicles need the new battery registered so the car's charging strategy and stop-start system recognise it correctly from the first drive. We carry the equipment to do this on the makes and models where it's required, as part of the same visit as the fitting.

AGM vs EFB — what's the difference?

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) sits between standard flooded and AGM technology, and is often fitted as original equipment on entry-level stop-start models. It's a step up from standard, but doesn't match AGM for cycling tolerance or electrical capacity.

AGM batteries cost more upfront than standard or EFB units, reflecting the more complex construction. In return, they typically last longer under stop-start use than a standard battery would manage even ignoring the compatibility issue, and they hold up better through short-journey, low-mileage driving patterns common around Warwickshire towns.
